An independent educational view of Britain's electricity system. Live system metrics cover GB; the asset catalogue includes UK projects. Northern Ireland is outside the GB synchronous system.

What the numbers mean

Transmission demand proxy
Elexon FUELINST total generation outturn, used as a proxy for rolling transmission-system demand. It is not total UK electricity consumption. Embedded generation and pumping/export conventions differ from national demand series.
Domestic metered generation
Sum of non-interconnector FUELINST fuel categories at one measurement time. Includes reported pumped-storage discharge, excludes pumping load and much embedded wind and solar. The mix percentages use positive domestic metered output as the denominator.
Interconnectors
Signed flows from the same FUELINST snapshot. Positive means into GB. Map lines connect indicative country endpoints; they are schematic, not surveyed cable routes.
Carbon intensity
NESO Carbon Intensity API. National estimated actual is preferred; forecast is labelled when actual is unavailable. Regional values are modelled forecasts, not direct measurements of local electricity. Whole-system mix uses the Carbon Intensity API half-hourly percentage mix, including embedded estimates; no MW is inferred from those percentages.
Assets & capacity
Official REPD and DUKES snapshots. Installed electrical MW are catalogue values, not live site output. BESS is storage, not a primary energy source. MW is power; MWh is energy. Planning status can lag reality and records may include related/co-located projects; do not add all capacities as a fleet total.
Network geography
NESO's approximate 2024 DNO licence-area boundaries. All source vertices are preserved, with matching land and region geometry. These are service territories, not live power-flow zones. Operator names in source data may be historical; current group labels are provided in the directory.
